Virginia Tech junior All-American Lindsey Butler, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor champion in the women's 800 meters and distance medley relay, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss being the top seed in the 800 and No. 2 entry in the DMR entering the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships on March 11-12 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Butler revisits running a personal-best 2:01.23 to repeat as ACC indoor winner and elevating to the No. 9 all-time collegiate indoor competitor, as well as anchoring the DMR to a season-best 10:53.75 to secure the conference title, just off the program record 10:53.62 in 2018 that has the Hokies ranked as the No. 7 school in NCAA indoor history. She examines how instrumental the arrival of Duke transfer Leigha Torino has been in leading off the DMR, along with the contributions of Star Price and Hannah Ballowe, and how excited Butler is to have an opportunity to compete against top-seeded Arkansas, which ascended to the No. 3 all-time collegiate program by clocking 10:51.63 on Jan. 28 at the Razorback Invitational. Butler reflects on entering the Division 1 indoor championship meet last year as the top seed at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., and placing fourth overall, followed by a sixth-place finish in June at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She explains the learning experiences from both finals opportunities, and how grateful she is to join Sarah Hendrick of Kennesaw State, Claire Seymour of Brigham Young and Shafiqua Maloney of Arkansas as the only women to return for this season's Division 1 indoor championship after competing in both the NCAA indoor and outdoor finals last year. Butler expresses gratitude to Virginia Tech distance coaches Eric Johannigmeier and Jason Cusack, and how well they continue to prepare the Hokies to perform well at ACC and NCAA championship meets, in addition to sharing how her background in both the hurdles and running cross country at Corning High in New York has contributed to her development and success as an elite middle-distance athlete in college. She also analyzes the potential for Virginia Tech to challenge for a podium spot in Birmingham, with her two events supported by a pair of pole vaulters, multiple athletes in the weight throw and a triple jump qualifier.
